Watch: Rhymefest Talks Meeting Kanye West in New Documentary
While most of us credit the songs we love to the artist whose name is on the album cover, a deeper look at the liner notes affirms that music is a collaborative art, with a lot of talent bolstering the artists who enjoy the credit. In hip hop, one of the names that comes up again and again is Che "Rhymefest" Smith. The New York rapper, who is now based in Chicago, is among the most respected names in music, and the pen behind such hits as Kanye West's "Jesus Walks" and this year's Oscar winner for Best Original Song, "Glory."
Now, the spotlight is on Rhymefest in a new documentary called In My Father's House, from Emmy-nominated directors Ricki Stern and Annie Sundberg. The film, which will premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in April, documents the music prodigy trying to reunite with his estranged grandfather and build his own family. Plus, it's full of juicy insider stories of the New York and Chicago hip hop scene.
We've got an exclusive clip of one of these moments, in which Rhymefest describes meeting a young and, as he describes, "arrogant" Kanye West for the first time. The duo would become frequent collaborators and close friends.
Check out the clip below, and check out the film when it premieres at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 16.
