Barack Obama is a box office draw, but maybe not with the audience he was hoping for. 2016: Obama's America, an anti-Obama documentary made by conservative journalists Dinesh D'Souza and Jeff Sullivan, grossed a whopping $6.3 million at the box office ahead of the upcoming Republican National Convention. 
The film, which takes a critical look at Obama's policy, history and influences, takes the crown for highest-grossing documentary of the year ($9.2 million total in North America) and the top grossing conservative doc ever. 
While 2016: Obama's America beat out the weekend's new releases — including Joseph Gordon-Levitt's bike messenger thriller Premium Rush, Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell's indie comedy Hit & Run and ghost horror flick Apparition, starring Twilight's Ashley Green — last week's winner, The Expendables 2, held onto the #1 spot for its second week. 
Sparkle, which opened in fifth place last week, dropped out of the top ten altogether this weekend, and grossed $4.2 million for a grand total of $18.9 million since its debut. Not exactly a runaway hit, but not terrible for a film that cost less than $20 million to produce. 
Not a lot of stiff competition on the horizon for The Expendables 2 over Labor Day next weekend: Shia LeBeouf and Tom Hardy will ride into town with Prohibition-era drama Lawless and producer Sam Raimi will attempt to scare audiences with thriller The Possession.
