Cookie Johnson Gave Her Husband Magic Johnson THIS Advice To Help Him Build A Better Bond With Son EJ!
Magic Johnson credits his wife Cookie Johnson for changing his perspective about his son EJ Johnson coming out as gay. Ahead of the April 22 release of the docuseries, “They Call Me Magic” on Apple TV+, the Johnsons spoke candidly to Variety about how they built a stronger relationship.
“I was out to all my friends,” EJ recalls. “[My parents] were the last people that I really had to talk to about it. It wasn’t new for me, but they had to really take that in and digest it. Especially my dad, because he was really the last person to talk to.”
EJ came out as gay to his father in 2010. “I think it was just a lot for him to swallow in that conversation. A lot of just going back and forth. And he just was rattling off about things that weren’t particularly nice. But he’s not somebody who works great being cornered or surprised,” EJ explained.
EJ didn't come out to the public until 2013 when TMZ released a video of him holding hands with his alleged former boyfriend.
The basketball legend and proud father went on to explain that although he was initially taken aback by the news, he changed his perspective over time.
“He changed me,” Johnson said of EJ. “He was so proud. This dude here is just so proud of who he is.”
The proud dad added, “As I grew older, as my wife talked to me, I couldn’t [judge EJ]. I had to accept who he was and who he wanted to be. He actually helped me get there. Because he was so proud. Cookie said, ‘Look in the mirror.’ I said, ‘You’re right.’ Because I’m proud of who I am. And he got it from me.”
