Tyler, The Creator Intentionally Repaired His Image Ahead Of ‘Igor’

The award-winner looked to Kanye West, Pharrell, and Jay-Z as inspiration.

On Thursday (Nov. 7) WSJ Magazine celebrated “eight extraordinary thinkers and entertainers” during their Innovators Awards at the revamped Museum of Modern Art.

Listed as a musician, producer, video director, fashion designer, entrepreneur, and festival curator, Tyler, the Creator was among the honorees, crowned as their 2019 Music Innovator. A$AP Rocky presented Tyler the honor and he even addressed their previous beef. “It’s an honor to present this award to my best friend today, but little do y’all know that I hate that motherf***er, that’s the truth,” A$AP joked, according to Page Six. “He’s one of my inspirations … [and] people don’t know this, but when we first came into the rap game, we didn’t even like each other. Our crews didn’t like each other.”

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal earlier this week, Tyler spoke to his evolution as an entertainer and his decision to change who the media once knew him to be. “[When] my music got better, I asked myself, ‘Why do Kanye and Pharrell and Jay-Z respect me, but the people that respect them don’t fuck with my music?” he thought back on. “Well, maybe if I stop being funny on the internet, people will focus on my talent.”

Accompanying his triumphant win, the innovator graced the 2019 November cover of the WSJ innovators issue.

The 28-year-olds refined image has surely paid off, he reached No.1 on the Billboard Artist 100 Chart in May of this year. IGOR, his latest self-produced, the 12-play project also reached No.1 on the Billboard 100, with the number one streamed track “Earfquake” to climb to the No.13 spot on the Billboard Hot 100. His 2017 fourth-studio album Flower Boy was nominated for a Grammy for “Best Rap Album.”

Other honorees included: Julianne Moore (Acting & Activism Innovator), Riccardo Tisci  (Fashion Innovator), Studio KO (Design Innovator), Bryan Stevenson (Social Justice Innovator), Melina Matsoukas (Film Innovator), Cindy Sherman (Art Innovator), and Eddie Murphy (Entertainment Innovator).
