Kenyan born, Brooklyn based artist Wangechi Mutu is masterful at mixed-media. Her paintings, a combination of collage, paint, fabric and jewels, are shockingly beautiful while her sculptures and videos are transcendentally surreal. A comprehensive collection of her work dating from the mid-1990s to the present, titled “Wangechi Mutu: A Fantastic Journey,” is currently on display at the Brooklyn Museum, through March 9, 2014.

This exhibition brings together more than fifty works, including large-scale collages, never-before-seen sketchbook drawings and oversized installations and videos. The most notable video is Mutu’s first animated project, “The End of Eating Everything,” a collaboration with recording artist Santigold. Each piece is individually immersive, taking the viewer on a trip into the mind of Mutu. The body of work is an exploration, exposition and explosion of ideas on Black female sexuality and representation in the Western world.
