Nick Cannon Responds After His Talk Show Gets Canceled
Nick Cannon has spoken out after news broke that his syndicated eponymous talk show has been canceled after being on air for just one season.
During his March 10th episode of The Nick Cannon Show, the talk show host said that although he was sad about the news, he understands why the decision was made.
“This is show business, right? And we know the biggest word in that is 'business', and this is a business,” he explained during the show's Rumor Report segment with Angela Yee, PEOPLE reports. “As a businessman, I know that as much fun as we have on the show, business is the thing that makes this whole thing tick and operate.”
Adding: “Honestly, I show up each and every day bright and early to give you a show, but I'm also a businessman, and you understand when there's certain forms and certain platforms," he said. "This has been a dream come true for me to be able to do this for you each and every day, but my business mind, I want to expand and elevate in a way.”
According to Deadline, Lionsgate’s Debmar-Mercury, the show’s producer-distributor reportedly shared the news with the crew on Thursday (Mar. 10) that the upcoming two episodes would be the last ones in the queue.
The outlet also noted the initial plan was for The Nick Cannon Show to go on a five-week hiatus while the entertainer was filming FOX’s The Masked Singer and VH1’s Wild ‘N Out, with an expectation that the crew would get a week's worth of pay during the filming break. Instead, the decision transitioned into permanently shutting down production and the crew would get a severance.
“It’s never easy to cancel a production with clear potential but, after a great deal of deliberation and examining various options, we have made the difficult business decision to end production on Nick Cannon,” Mort Marcus and Ira Bernstein, co-presidents of Debmar-Mercury, said in a statement.
Adding: “We plan to offer viewers original episodes of the daytime talk show through the remainder of this season. Our thanks go to the very talented Nick Cannon and our wonderful production team, and we wish Nick continued success with his many hit ventures.”
The Nick Cannon Show is ranked as the lowest-rated single-host daytime syndicated talk show this season and has average a 0.4 household rating, Variety reports.
Filmed in front of a live studio audience in Harlem, New York, Cannon often remained candid with viewers and shared several personal life moments that he broke on the show.
