Issa Rae Hosts Fashion's Biggest Awards Show Wearing Dress That Says "Every N*gga Is A Star"
Last night (June 4), fashion's CFDA Awards took place, and we had our eye specifically on the lady of the hours, Issa Rae.
Already making history as the event's first Black female host, Issa had to further ensure that the people knew she was doing it for the culture. How? Well feast your eyes on her custom Pyer Moss look. Designed by Black designer Kerby Jean-Raymond, who (well, if you don’t know) is always reppin’ for the culture. Check out his past AW18 woke AF collection where he took the people to church during his runway show.
Styled by Jason Rambert, Issa took the carpet in a blue asymmetrical jumpsuit that featured an array of over 180,000 blue Swarovski crystals embedded over its mesh overlay. Outside of the variation of blue crystals, the most iconic part of the look were the words engraved in the black sash that cinched Issa’s waist. “Every N*gga Is A Star.”
Yep, you read that right! In true Issa fashion and living by her motto, “I’m routing for everybody Black,” she encompassed her usual Black AF vibes, making history while making history. But this is why we are all the way here for sis, because she knows how to use her voice on her platform.
And, of course, upon kicking off the night the Insecure star addressed the impact that Black culture has on fashion, stating: "We've gone from having white designers study Black culture to make Black clothes for white people that are too expensive for Black people to buy to [having] a Black man bringing Black culture to a historically white fashion house making clothes too expensive for everybody."
Although most of our attention was left swooning over the blue Pyer Moss stunner, Issa later slipped into a radiant green Sergio Hudson double breasted suit which, again, looked amazing paired with all her melanin.
TBH, last night was pretty Black AF for the fashion industry, and we couldn’t be any happier. We’d like to send a huge shout out to Issa for setting the mood. Job well done, sis!
