‘Representation Matters’: Gabrielle Union Shares Video of Kaavia In ‘Little Mermaid Costume’
Gabrielle Union shared a sweet Instagram video of her daughter Kaavia James getting ready for Halloween in what presumes to be her costume as Ariel, The Little Mermaid.
In the video, the three-year-old posed in an Ariel costume, with a purple seashell bikini top and a shiny turquoise tail. To which Union, captioned the post: "You know we had to set off Halloween season right. May I present 'Ariel & Her Sea Legs' for awards consideration. #RepresentationMatters."

And when it comes to representation, singer and actress Halle Bailey, is the star of the new live-action The Little Mermaid movie, making her the first Black actress to star as the Disney character and princess.
"The fact that now it's getting to be played by me, a person who looks like me, woman of color, I'm just like, wow, I'm so grateful what it will do for all the other little Black and brown boys and girls who will see themselves in me," she told PEOPLE in an interview.
Adding, "Because I know if I had seen myself when I was younger, I think my whole perspective would've changed."
The movie is slated for a May 2023 release and is a reimagined version of the 1989 animated classic. It tells the story of Ariel, who eventually falls in love with Prince Eric, played by Jonah Hauer-King. Melissa McCarthy plays the role of the villainous Ursula, while Javier Bardem assumes the role of Ariel’s dad King Triton. Daveed Diggs voices Sebastian, while Jacob Tremblay voices Flounder, and Awkwafina voices Scuttle.
