Mahershala Ali’s Reaction To His ‘Green Book’ Co-star’s Statement About White Filmmakers Telling Black Stories Has Twitter Screaming

Cringeworthy.

The most recent Hollywood Reporter roundtable includes a slew of actors featured in several Oscar front-running films, including the likes of Black Panther's Chadwick Boseman and the massively controversial film Green Book's Mahershala Ali.

The latter's white co-star, Viggo Mortensen, who was also featured in the roundtable, took the time to address the backlash surrounding the fact that the film — which tells the story of an African-American jazz pianist's friendship with a white American bouncer — is both directed and written by white men, and his words only seemed to make things worse.

Mortensen started by saying that he was asked in a recent interview whether he thought it was OK that "a white man directed this story." In giving his response, he used Ali as an example that left many who viewed the clip confused and even further infuriated.

"I said, 'Do you think it would be OK if Mahershala fell madly in love with a short story about Scottish immigrants who become cowboys in the West and about their descendants?'" he said. "If he loved that story, is there anything wrong with him directing that, or anything wrong with him directing a samurai movie in Japan? No. It's not one thing or the other."

His remarks, which translated to some as, "I love your story and I can tell it better than you can," left a sour taste in many's mouths, with viewers noticing that some of those displeased reactions seemed to come from his fellow roundtable participants.

As seen in the clip, both Boseman and Ali appeared to give the actor interesting looks while he made his comments, while Timothée Chalamet and Richard E Grant also seemed displeased with his boldness, in the moment.

Take a look at the clip, below:

  • Green Book is currently a frontrunner to win Best Picture at this year's Academy Awards following its win at the Producer's Guild Awards, last weekend.
