Kaash Paige On Her Biggest Fears, Being Inspired By Erykah Badu And Coming Out

We caught up with the singer and songwriter to talk about the story behind her rap moniker, her greatest fears and what qualities she looks for in a girlfriend.

Kaash Paige is pretty much just like any other teenager. She has her fears (spiders), pet peeves (smacking), her vice (“tacos”) and a life motto (“I don’t hold grudges”).

“I’m super scared of spiders,” she admits. “I call my homie to come kill a spider before I will. If it’s anything with bugs, I might as well go ahead and call the exterminator. For real.”

  • Born and raised D'kyla Paige Woolen in Dallas, TX, success has come quick for the 19-year-old, who was inspired to take up music by her father, who was a sound engineer. That spark bloomed into a love for music and soon after graduating high school Paige caught the eye of one of music’s most storied institutions — Def Jam — after the viral explosion of her jam, “Love Songs,” on TikTok.

Late last year, the teen released her eight-track EP, Park Car Convos, a collective introspective musing from Paige on love, moving on from toxic relationships, fake friends, and leaving behind bad habits.

  • There’s also the fact that Kaash Paige also one of the few openly bisexual R&B artists for her generation. “I didn’t really come out in all honesty. My mom just went through my phone. I was like 16 or 17. She just kind of found out herself and that was pretty much it,” she candidly shares.

As for what she looks for in potential partners? One thing is for certain. “You just gotta be naturally cool,” Paige breezily says. “I like people who have ambition and drive. Sweet people and just super genuine, you know? That just makes my heart go boom.”

  • Most recently, the Def Jam signee recently released a new single, “Jaded,” in June and she’s currently, in the midst of preparations for her debut studio album, Teenage Fever. The project is slated to come out sometime this year and, ahead of its release, BET caught up with Kaash Paige on 106&Park Mic Check to hear how she came up with her rap moniker, being inspired by Erykah Badu, her advice for dealing with haters and more.
