More People Now View the Tea Party Unfavorably
The Tea Party may have many in the current crop of Republican presidential candidates lurching even further to the right to win the movement’s support, but the rest of the nation isn’t so enamored.
A CNN/ORC poll released Tuesday found that 53 percent of Americans have an unfavorable view of the Tea Party, an increase of 26 percent since January 2010.Twenty-eight percent viewed the movement favorably. In addition, 54 percent said they view the Republican Party unfavorably and 56 percent said that the policies being proposed by Republican leaders in both chambers of Congress would move the country in the wrong direction.
Similarly, an AP/GfK poll conducted in August also found that 46 percent of Americans view the Tea Party unfavorably, and 28 percent view it favorably. It reflected a 10 percent increase in unfavorability since a similar survey was taken last November after the midterm elections.
The news might have some Democrats cheering, but not for long, since they fared only slightly better in the CNN poll. Only 44 percent of respondents said they have a favorable view of the Democratic Party and 53 percent said that the policies being proposed by congressional Democratic leaders are moving the nation in the right direction.
