Kwame Kilpatrick Is Going to Jail for 14 Parole Violations
Kwame Kilpatrick, the disgraced former mayor of Detroit, is heading back to jail today for a three-day stint. It is the penalty he's agreed to pay for 14 parole violations related to failing to report income, the Associated Press reports. Kilpatrick, on parole for a 2008 text-message scandal that ended his political career, chose to go to jail rather than go through the formal parole violations process.
Kilpatrick will serve his time in a Michigan corrections facility. His wife and children live in Texas, where the family moved when he was released from prison in 2011, but he's been spending his days in a Detroit courtroom, where he's on trial for public corruption. When not in court, he is confined to his mother's nearby home.
In December, Kilpatrick was caught on a security tape counting $2,000 from a wire transfer he picked up at Walmart. He was ordered in 2008 to pay Detroit $1 million for lying under oath and still owes the city more than $800,000.
