Spike Lee Kickstarter Campaign Crosses $1 Million Mark
Spike Lee is getting close to reaching his goal of raising $1.25 million for an upcoming independent film through crowd-funding platform Kickstarter.
The director crossed the $1 million mark on Wednesday, drawing in 4,566 total backers, four of whom pledged the top amount of $10,000. The top donors will get prizes ranging from a courtside date with Lee at a New York Knicks basketball game (awarded to fellow director Steven Soderbergh, the first to pledge five figures) to the chance to spend a day on the set of the film.
While Lee is keeping details of his film under wraps, he has revealed that the joint will be about "humans addicted to blood," though it is "not the Black Twilight." There is, however, "a lot of sex in it." Despite the lack of clarity on the story, cast or genre of the film, fans seem to be rushing in with donations.
The Do the Right Thing director's campaign, though successful with fans, is not without its critics who believe Lee is sucking resources away from smaller filmmakers. "Their agenda blew up in their face," Lee told us of reporters who have called his tactics into question. He added, "I've been doing Kickstarter since before there was Kickstarter."
