Hip Hop Awards 2023: GloRilla's Biggest Fan Steals the Spotlight at the ‘BET Hip Hop Awards’
Inside a crowded auditorium of hip-hop dignitaries donning their finest fashions and bling, an older gentleman dressed in a suit stands clapping and excitedly cheering on GloRilla’s performance.
It’s the “BET Hip Hop Awards” 2023, and the show, taped on October 3rd in Atlanta, celebrated 50 years of hip-hop. But despite the culture’s multi-generational span, this gray-haired, well-dressed senior seems overly appreciative of this Memphis rapper’s crunk and trap-inspired sound. Of the fans standing up throughout Glo’s energetic performance, he’s probably the oldest and the most supportive.
And you would be, too, if you were Mr. Woods, the father of 24-year-old Gloria Hallelujah Woods, aka GloRilla. And this wasn’t his first time being a proud dad, either.
“I make that well known that I’m her daddy. I’m super excited and very proud of my daughter,” Glo’s dad tells BET.com. “I think people know that I’m her daddy, because I let everybody know…I let everybody know that’s my daughter.”
Glo’s dad attended the 65th Annual Grammy Awards with her earlier this year and told “Entertainment Tonight” how “extremely proud” he was of his daughter. But any real hip-hop fan will tell you that BET’s “Hip Hop Awards” are less stiff than other award shows and a lot more fun. It wasn’t hard to tell that Mr. Woods was enjoying himself as his baby took to the stage and tore it down!
Music and Entertainment Enthusiast Stephen G. Hill, a former BET executive, spotted Glo’s dad from a nearby seat and couldn’t help but capture the moment. “I’ve never met GloRilla. I’ve never met her dad. I recognized the beams of pride emanating from his being as those of a proud parent the moment she touched the stage. I’ve happily been the provider of those beams for my kid and the recipient from my parents. Unmistakable, unique gifts that give to both,” said Hill.
This feeling of family made the “BET Hip Hop Awards” 2023 so special for hip-hop fans of all ages as the genre continues to celebrate its 50th.
Watch GloRilla perform in front of her dad and a packed house of Hip Hop enthusiasts when the show premieres on BET on Oct. 10 at 9 p.m. EST.
