Prince's Former Attorney L. Londell McMillan Disputes Jay-Z's '4:44' Diss of Him

He says he likes the beat though.

Jay-Z’s new album has been so far praised by fans and critics alike, but, like Beyonce’s Lemonade, Hov’s 4:44 isn’t without some name-dropping.

Some of those named on the album have already responded. Perhaps one of the strangest references was Jay’s diss of L. Londell McMillan, Prince’s former attorney and estate advisor, on the track “Caught Their Eyes.”

"I sat down with Prince, eye to eye. He told me his wishes before he died," he rapped. "Now, Londell McMillan, he must be color blind. They only see green from them purple eyes."

It didn’t end there. The legendary Brooklyn emcee also took shots at how The Purple One’s estate was handled: “This guy had ‘slave’ on his face. You think he wanted the masters with his masters?" he rhymed. "You greedy bastards sold tickets to walk through his house. I’m surprised you ain’t auction off the casket.”

Welp, this didn’t have McMillan too happy. He responded to Hov via Twitter, tweeting, “Yes, I heard the track! Not focusing on a diss track now. Focused on not letting WBR control masters. I do like the beat. #Emancipation2.”

In November 2016, Prince’s estate did file a lawsuit against Roc Nation and Tidal for copyright infringement. McMillan is likely the one at the center of the legal dispute. He also provided a statement to Billboard, explaining further as to why he’s actually responsible for trying to get Prince off of Warner Bros Records.

"I like the beat, but I wonder who he thinks helped Prince to take 'slave' off of his face," he said. "It was a homie Jay-Z grew up with in the same neighborhood, Londell McMillan." The "slave" reference dates back to the 1990s, when Prince made public appearances with the word written on his face. It was his way of expressing an uncompromising nature toward the terms of his contract with Warner Music Group.
