Last week in Paris Diddy and Shyne reconciled during fashion week, ending over a decade of animosity between the music mogul and his one-time protégé.
Shyne reflected on brokering peace in a statement to XXL.com, in which he declared the moment a great victory for hip hop culture.
“You can’t overstate the cultural significance of what Shyne and Diddy reconciling means,” he wrote. “You know I’m about it when it comes to them hammers, thus unfortunately this could have ended like Tupac and [Notorious] B.I.G. But what if Tupac and B.I.G ended like this and reconciled?"
Extrapolating even beyond hip hop, Shyne made grand proclamations about the impact his reunion with Diddy will have on Black and Latino cultures.
“On a scale of what this says to African and Latin American men, who have been trained to self-hate and to self-destruct, this is a watershed moment,” he said. “The paradigm shift that’s taking place as the way Afro and Latin American men deal with each other is tremendous. This could be a gigantic step in putting an end to the cycle of hate and violence that is self-genocidal and destroying the minority community by sending fathers off to jail or an early grave.”
The tension between Shyne and Diddy stems from the infamous Club New York shooting of 1999, where three people were injured and Shyne was arrested for attempted murder, assault and reckless endangerment.
As a promising Bad Boy signee, he was attending the club with Diddy and the music exec's then-girlfriend Jennifer Lopez. After his conviction, Shyne severed all ties with Diddy and the label. He was incarcerated from 2001 until 2009.
Shyne, born Jamal Michael Barrow, converted to Judaism and changed his name to Moses Michael Levi while in prison. He and Diddy buried the hatchet at the Kenzo fashion show in Paris during fashion week.
