Dante Cunningham Arrested for Sending 'Terroristic' Texts

NBA player jailed over incident with woman he allegedly assaulted.

Minnesota Timberwolves forward Dante Cunningham was arrested for the second time in three days on Sunday (April 6), ESPN reports. Police say the fifth-year NBA pro sent threatening text messages to a woman he was living with, after he was charged with felony domestic assault for choking the unidentified woman.

Authorities said Cunningham sent messages that “rose to a terroristic level” to a woman who has been living with Cunningham for eight months. The woman called police early Sunday morning because Cunningham had contacted her, violating a protection order from the original incident.

The Timberwolves have not disciplined Cunningham, but the team released an official statement today. "The situation with Dante Cunningham is very fluid, and we continue to monitor all available information," the team said. "We reiterate that the Minnesota Timberwolves do not condone the behavior described in the accusations. We continue to wait for the legal process to run its course and will have further comment when appropriate."

NBA commissioner Adam Silver will decide if the league suspends Cunningham, who was drafted 33rd overall by the Portland Trailblazers in 2009. This will be the first major disciplinary decision the new commissioner will make since taking over for David Stern in February.

The 6-foot 8-inch 26-year-old is averaging 6.1 points and 4.1 rebounds in his fifth year in the NBA. The Villanova product will be a free agent on July 1.
