‘Reasonable Doubt’ Heats Up with Morris Chestnut’s Season 2 Debut
Season 2 of “Reasonable Doubt” picks up with Jax Stewart, played by Emayatzy Corinealdi, trying to regain control of her life after the chaos of last season’s trial and a dangerous affair. Just as she begins to heal, a close friend confesses to killing her husband, claiming self-defense—a claim that an unyielding prosecutor fiercely challenges. Jax brings an ambitious defense attorney to navigate this high-stakes case, but tensions escalate quickly. As she fights to defend her friend, Jax has to save her crumbling marriage and maintain her sanity–facing her life’s biggest professional and personal challenges.
The drama series, executive produced by Kerry Washington, kicks off the new season with an added dose of intensity and allure as it marks the debut of Morris Chestnut. He joins the cast as Corey Cash, a high-powered attorney from Chicago. Jax calls on him to assist with her latest case, bringing an even more engaging and dramatic storyline. “Throughout the season, you see the twists and the turns and the ups and downs, emotionally, sometimes physically, of what happens and transpires in these types of cases,” Chestnut tells BET.
Corey is facing mounting pressures, both personally and professionally. While navigating the complexities of defending Jax’s best friend Shanelle (Shannon Kane) in the high-profile case, he is also on a path of redemption, aiming to prove himself in the legal world. However, Corey’s professional challenges are compounded by unresolved issues with his father, creating an intense emotional struggle as he juggles the demands of the courtroom with the weight of his strained family relationships.
“When my character comes to help her with the case, it's not just about helping Jax as an associate; it’s not just about helping Jax's friend get off the case; he’s coming with an ulterior motive of his own to redeem himself from something that’s happened in his past,” the NAACP Image Award-winning actor says.
Chestnut shares that working on the show has helped him grow personally, as the diverse characters he portrays require in-depth research, allowing him to explore new perspectives and experiences.
“First of all, when it comes to studying and understanding… one thing I love about being an actor is when you read different scripts. I’m a lawyer in this show, so I have to research certain things with this character, like what's happening with domestic violence. And this other show I'm doing now, I play a doctor, so I'm learning things here,” he says. “So, having taken all of those experiences and then just talking and meeting people from all walks of life, you just grow. If you're open, receptive, and empathetic, and you listen to people, for me, that’s how I grow. I like to listen and have great, in-depth discussions. I learn from anyone I'm talking to on set and anyone I'm dealing with,” he continues.
Season two of “Reasonable Doubt” is now streaming only on Hulu.
