Women's History Month: Shiona Turini Turns Heads With Her Stylish Looks

The former costume designer of HBO's 'Insecure' is a go-to wardrobe consultant for many A-listers in the film industry.

Fashion stylist and costume designer Shiona Turini is a go-to wardrobe consultant for many A-listers in the film industry. For the last three season’s of HBO Max’s Insecure, she created looks for the shows beloved characters, creating iconic moments in the process. In the seventh episode of the final season, Turini was responsible for curating a collection that solely featured clothing, shoes and accessories made by a Black woman. It was a first for the critically acclaimed show.

“I’ve seen how [featuring Black-owned brands] has helped small designers, Black designers. It’s incredible,” Turini said about the styling decision. “I feel like we’re helping someone’s career and changing the trajectory of their brand. It’s amazing to collaborate in that way and to support Black designers in that way.”

Turini is also responsible for the costumes on the Lena Waithe and Melina Matsoukas directed film, Queen & Slim. Her work on the project earned her a nomination for a Costume Designers Guild Award in the Contemporary Costumes category.

The native of Bermuda began her career in public relations. While working in New York City, Turini’s knack for style led to her first editorial job as an accessories editor at the iconic W magazine. Her career has also included styling commercials, music videos, and red carpet looks.
