Invisible Children, the group behind the viral Kony 2012 video, says it will release a sequel to the high-impact film later this week.

According to Invisible Children’s blog, Kony 2012 Part II will premiere Tuesday, April 3, 2012, and includes an update for supporters who have planned to join in the group’s “Cover the Night” demonstration.

The original Kony video skyrocketed into global Internet fame last month, garnering more than 100 million views in one week with its impassioned appeal to viewers to help bring Congolese warlord and leader of the Lord’s Resistance Army, Joseph Kony, to justice.

Kony has been accused of organizing and perpetuating some of the most egregious war crimes that include murder, rape, enslavement and the exploitation of children. During “Cover the Night,” the group is encouraging supporters worldwide to go out on the night of April 20 and canvas their neighborhoods with Kony posters in efforts to bring awareness to the warlord’s crimes.

However, despite Kony’s reputation, not everyone welcomed the call to action depicted in Kony 2012.  After the release of the video, Invisible Children faced harsh criticism from many in Uganda who felt the campaign was misguided and others in the U.S. who questioned the group’s management of funds and other organizational issues.

Invisible Children co-founder and filmmaker Jason Russell suffered a mental breakdown last month allegedly as a result of the film's backlash and was hospitalized after he was found wandering naked through the streets near his home in San Diego, talking to himself and slapping his hands on the ground.
