Michael Jordan, Jay Z, Carmelo Anthony Salute Derek Jeter in Tribute Video
Whatever tributes await Derek Jeter in this his 20th and final Major League Baseball season, they’d be hard-pressed to come close to this new Jordan Brand ad.
On Monday, Nike’s Jordan Brand unleashed a timeless, 90-second ad entitled “RE2PECT” as a tribute to Jeter’s legendary career. The commercial has everyone from Jay Z to Carmelo Anthony, Spike Lee, Tiger Woods and Michael Jordan himself tipping their caps out of respect, re2pect to be exact, to Jeter for a tremendous career with the New York Yankees.
The ad — whose theme features everyone tipping their caps to the future first-ballot Hall of Fame shortstop — opens up with Jeter, No. 2, approaching home plate and facing Boston Red Sox pitcher Jon Lester. The Boston pitcher tips his cap to Jeter, setting off a wave of famous New York City personalities, and celebrities as a whole, giving the hat nod of respect to the Yankees' captain.
Everyone from Lee to former NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani to Jeter’s family, police officers, firefighters, Billy Crystal, a duo of humble Red Sox fans, and even three New York Mets players with their faces blurred out tip their caps to Jeter. And that’s far from it.
Rapper Action Bronson, producer Alchemist, WNBA basketball star Maya Moore, New York Knicks president Phil Jackson and fiancée Jeanie Buss, Hov, and Jeter’s former Yankees manager Joe Torre seated with beloved Bronx Bomber teammates Mariano Rivera, Andy Pettitte, Tino Martinez and Jorge Posada follow in succession before Jordan himself tips his own cap to DJ.
Beautifully done.
Jordan Brand swooped in on Jeter relatively early into his Yankees career, with the shortstop rocking his own Jordan Brand cleats to games. The two have been in business since.
Adweek reports that this commercial will be broadcast during the MLB All-Star Game on Tuesday night. The Midsummer Classic itself will likely have a separate tribute scheduled for Jeter.
The Yankees captain, who has won five World Series titles, touts a career .311 batting average and ranks eighth on the MLB’s all-time hit list with 3,408.
