Tom Cruise‘s personal life has been in shambles these past few years, but it seems to not make one bit of difference to his box office appeal. The veteran movie star made magic once again with his new film, Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation, which came in number one at the weekend box office, exceeding expectations with $56 million.
What's more, Rogue Nation scored the best three-day weekend opening in the history of the franchise, and was a huge hit overseas, where in many markets the film was Cruise's strongest opening to date.
Not so good news in second place: Ed Helms's Vacation earned a disappointing $21.2 million in its first five days. The sequel to the Chevy Chase classic fell far below expectations despite little competition in the family-comedy genre.
Ant-Man came in at number three with $12.6 million, and Minions grabbed another $12.2 million for fourth place. Adam Sandler's Pixels rounds out the top five, bringing in an additional $10.4 million.
Meanwhile, Jake Gyllenhaal's Southpaw is continuing to do well, earning $7.5 million for a domestic total of $31.6 million. The film is still hanging in the top 10 and can be considered a minor hit for the actor and his co-star 50 Cent.
