Jada Pinkett Smith Describes Emotional Connection with Tupac as ‘Friendship-Love Chemistry’
Jada Pinkett Smith is making headlines again with another revealing interview this week.
In a recent interview with Rolling Out, the “Set It Off” actress acknowledges Tupac as her soulmate yet emphasizes that they never pursued a romantic relationship due to a lack of chemistry.
During the conversation with Christal Jordan of Rolling Out on Thursday, October 12, preceding the launch of her revealing memoir, she asserted that Tupac had proposed marriage to her, and she declined.
Smith described her relationship with the late rapper as "friendship-love chemistry" which ultimately set them up as a "dynamic duo."
Jordan also asked the Red Table Talk host if she believed there could be a “soulmate friendship” that does not include romance and Smith said, “Absolutely! We have soulmates. Our children can be our soulmates. I think this kind of romanticized idea is like a ‘soulmate.’ There’s all kinds of definitions of a soulmate.”
The actress continued, "If there is such a thing as past lives, I definitely think that Pac and I have traveled a few together."
Tupac and Pinkett Smith first met in the mid-1980s while they were both students at the Baltimore School for the Arts in Maryland. They developed a close friendship during high school and shared a deep bond, which included a shared passion for the arts and similar life experiences.
In an old interview, the actress reminisced about meeting Tupac Shakur in high school, describing him as initially "funny-looking." However, she noted that he had a magnetic presence, and they hit it off from the start.
This isn't the first time Pinkett Smith mentioned the lack of chemistry between them. In a 2015 interview on The Howard Stern Show, she revealed that she once asked Shakur to kiss her when they were younger, but the experience turned out to be "the most disgusting kiss for us both."
Following the rapper’s passing in 1996, Pinkett Smith married Will Smith in 1997. The “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” alum acknowledged in 2020 that he felt envious of his wife's connection with Shakur.
Despite having been officially married for over two decades, the actress disclosed recently that she and Smith have lived separately since 2016. “We’re still figuring it out,” she told People. “We’ve been doing some really heavy-duty work together. We just got deep love for each other and we are going to figure out what that looks like for us.”
