'Just Mercy' Wins Big At NAACP Image Awards
Just Mercy raked in a bunch of awards at the 51st annual NAACP Image Awards on Saturday night (February 22) as Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Foxx won for best actor and best supporting actor, respectfully.
During his acceptance speech, Jordan says that the moral of the film, which portrays an innocent Black man put on death row and later has his sentence reversed, is to bring awareness to other real-life cases of wrongfully convicted people of color.
“This project is a lot bigger than me. It’s about every person that’s wrongfully convicted and sitting in a jail cell right now," he said as he accepted the award.
Foxx won his fifth career Image Award for his role in Just Mercy, saying, “Thank you so much, black people, African-Americans, and everything else we are.”
He added: "It’s always great to get it from black folks because we are so talented."
Bryan Stevenson, whose Equal Justice Initiative is the inspiration for Just Mercy, also said a few words about mass incarceration and its devastating effect on the African-American community. Just Mercy won the Image Award for Best Motion Picture.
