Why We Are All Spider-Man
This week, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will swing into theaters worldwide, and the anticipation is high on this American favorite. We have been paying close attention to this buzz and can see that audiences are most excited for the mind-blowing special effects, the chemistry between Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) and Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone), and Jamie Foxx’s amazing portrayal of the mega-villain Electro.
But on top of the on-screen spectacle, there’s a unique draw to the web-slinger that doesn’t exist in other super heroes. It’s the relatable aspect of the character. The fact that we all have a little Spider-Man in us.
Of course, we’re not all super-brilliant teens who were bitten by a radioactive spider that gave us the ability to climb walls with heightened senses. But we connect with Peter Parker. The nerdish teen in the Spider-Man suit. Quiet and thoughtful, Parker comes from a family broken by unforeseeable circumstances. Aside from sympathy, audiences can relate to how this high schooler quietly and intelligently handles his life’s trials: developing into a genius despite losing his parents; skillfully (but non-violently) dealing with school bullies; taking care of his Aunt May, and turning his powers into a means to make the world safer.
Violence, crime and fear of unknown evils make us all feel vulnerable. But when he puts on the suit, it’s a massive release. He can breathe. Spider-Man always knows the right thing to do — he’s a vessel for good, heroic energy and saving people. He takes joy and pleasure in it, and a playfulness comes out of him. You look at him as a character and you see it — his quips, his funniness, his lighthearted qualities. That’s the part that everyone loves about Spider-Man.
You will get the chance to experience The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in theaters on May 2nd.
