Atlanta Police Solve The Case Of A 14-Year-Old Who Was Murdered In 1995
In 1995, 14-year-old Nacole Smith was raped and murdered while on her way to school in Atlanta, Georgia. The case, which was featured on America’s Most Wanted, has just been solved.
According to CBS News, DNA and genealogy tools have helped detectives identify a suspect. However, the person, whose name is not public, died in August of 2021 due to kidney and liver failure.
On June 7, 1995, Smith was walking to school when she went back home after forgetting an assignment. The teenager cut through a wooded area, which is where she was raped and shot twice in the face, according to WGCL.

In 2004, Atlanta police had a breakthrough after a 13-year-old girl was attacked but survived. They were able to obtain DNA and last month discovered there was a match with the 13-year-old’s attacker and Smith’s attacker from 1995.
Retired Atlanta Detective Vince Velasquez, who reopened the case in 2002, said at a press conference, "If you've ever seen a case that the Atlanta Police Department put any effort into, this was it. This case has not died."
Nacole's mother, Acquenellia Smith, who was also at the press conference, said, "Today for me is a bittersweet moment. I never imagined this person would be deceased, so many unanswered questions I had for him that I can never ask and get answers, but I would never say it was closure for me because I will live with this pain for the rest of my life."
Additional details will be made public next week, WGCL reports.
