Her magical run in the Little League World Series captured the country's attention this past summer.

Months later, people are still taking notice. On Monday, the Associated Press named pitcher Mo'ne Davis its 2014 Female Athlete of the Year. At 13 years old, Davis is the youngest athlete to win the prestigious award. U.S. editors and news directors voted her first over Lauren Hill, the Mt. St. Joseph freshman brain cancer patient who played her first college basketball game, and Serena Williams.

This past summer, Davis became the first girl to win a Little League World Series game, striking out eight boys to lead her Philadelphia Taney Dragons to victory in their first game of the tournament. In doing so, Davis became an instant celebrity with former and current athletes such as Magic Johnson, Kevin Durant and Matt Kemp all reaching out to the teenager in support. She even ended up being the cover subject of Sports Illustrated in late August.

When BET.com caught up with Davis during the same month, she commented: “Well, about girl power…girls are just better than boys. I gotta keep girls up there on the same level of boys like, ‘You could do anything a boy can do.’”

The intriguing part about Davis's achievement and future is the teen phenom says baseball isn't even her best sport. She also plays point guard for her school's varsity squad.
