Was Steve Harvey Shut Out of a Major Business Deal for Being Black?
Steve Harvey is one of the most famous and beloved men in the country, but there are some places where he's still not welcome. One of them, according to a new lawsuit, is NASCAR.
TMZ reports that racing executive Terrance Cox of Diversity Motorsports, who was partnered with Harvey to start their own team called Steve Harvey Races 4 Education, is filing a suit against the racing organization for shutting down their plans without cause. According to Cox, NASCAR is a good ol' boy network filled with racists.
In the suit, Cox points out all 48 drivers in the league's top-tier Sprint Cup are white and only one is African-American in its second tier Xfinity Series. He's suing the league for literally everything they've got — all the racing teams, worth $500 million.
A rep for NASCAR is adamantly denying the allegations, telling TMZ Sports the company "embraces all individuals interested and involved in our sport, whether as partners, fans, competitors or employees, and there is no merit to this lawsuit."
The statement continues, "Diversity both on and off the track continues to be a top priority for NASCAR and its stakeholders. We stand behind our actions, and will not let a publicity-seeking legal action deter us from our mission."
NASCAR plans to countersue Cox. For now, it doesn't look like Harvey is involved in the actual lawsuit.
