Ronda Rousey Needs More Time Off Before Returning to the UFC
Fight fans looking forward to the proposed July rematch between Ronda Rousey and Holly Holm will have to wait a bit longer.
On Tuesday, UFC President Dana White told Yahoo Sports that Rousey has asked for more time off and will not fight Holm in July at the UFC 200 Pay Per View. Rousey's reasoning? Well, the former bantamweight champion is slated to star in the remake of the movie Roadhouse and the filming's start has been pushed back.
"The filming of the movie got pushed back," White told Yahoo Sports. "She could do both, but the question is, should she do both? She could do both, but why should she? The filming is in a time frame where she'd finish before [UFC] 200, but it would be cutting it too close."
Aside from the movie, it's probably a wise decision, considering the brutal knockout beating that Holm gave her this past November in one of the most stunning upsets in mixed martial arts (MMA) history.
In the meantime, Holm will defend her title for the first time on March 5 against Miesha Tate at UFC 197.
The risk with that is Tate defeating Holm and ruining the impact of a Holm-Rousey rematch. But White doesn't see it like that. He says Rousey, who fought three times in under nine months last year, has earned the time off.
"The way I look at this one is, Ronda has worked her a** off for us for the last three years," White continued. "She's been fighting, promoting and building the sport. If anyone deserves the time off, it's her. The night [of UFC 193] Holly said she'd do the rematch and that Ronda deserved it and everything else. So we were holding it for her if she wanted to do it."
He added: "What that woman has done is above and beyond what anyone has done. I mean, it's just unbelievable what she's done in the last three years. Anything we needed, she didn't say no to anything; said no to nothing. She even took over responsibilities somebody else was supposed to have. So when she tells me she wants more time, you know what? She's got it."
Does this take away from your anticipation of a Holm-Rousey rematch?
