At the 56th NAACP Image Awards, held on February 22, 2025, at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in California, BET Media Group was honored with the prestigious NAACP Founders Award. This accolade recognizes BET's 45-year legacy of amplifying Black culture and championing authentic storytelling. Scott M. Mills, President and CEO of BET Media Group, accepted the award on behalf of the organization.
In his acceptance speech, Mills expressed profound gratitude to the NAACP and acknowledged the collective efforts of BET's team. He stated, "On behalf of everyone at BET, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for honoring BET with your Founders Award." Mills also commended the evening's honorees, nominees, and winners, recognizing them as "an incredible source of inspiration and pride for our community."
Reflecting on BET's journey, Mills highlighted its evolution from a pioneering cable network to a multifaceted media powerhouse. Founded in 1980 by Bob and Sheila Johnson, BET was established with the bold vision of creating a platform where Black voices could be seen, heard, and celebrated. Under the leadership of Debra Lee, the network expanded its global footprint, introducing acclaimed series like "The Game" and "Being Mary Jane," and solidifying its status as a premier platform for Black storytelling. Today, under Mills' guidance, BET encompasses a diverse array of platforms, including television, streaming, digital, live events, and international markets.
Derrick Johnson, NAACP President and CEO, lauded BET's enduring impact, stating, "For more than four decades, BET has been an innovator of culture, creating space for our community to see themselves recognized on-screen and inspiring generations to believe that their dreams are within reach."
The NAACP Founders Award is bestowed upon individuals or organizations that dare to dream beyond limits and turn vision into reality, leaving a legacy of generational impact and change. BET's recognition at the 56th NAACP Image Awards underscores its unwavering commitment to uplifting Black voices, shaping culture, and driving meaningful progress within the community.
