Commentary: Tyra Banks Is Feelin' Herself Without Makeup...and So Are We
Just as Photoshop did for magazines and auto tune for music, retouching apps have distorted our perception of what's "real" on social media.
Tyra Banks blew the cover off of Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Lopez and all those other celebs who post wrinkle-free, perfectly dewy "no makeup" snaps that leave us feeling blemished and haggard by comparison, by showing us how no-makeup, no-filter selfies are really done.
"You deserve to see the REAL me," Tyra explained in the caption, accompanying a pic of herself from first thing in the morning (she, quite literally, woke up like this). "You know how people say #nofilter but you know there's a freakin' filter on their pic? Or maybe there's a smidge of retouching going on but they're lying and saying it's all raw & real? Well, this morn, I decided to give you a taste of the really real me. I wanted to smooth out my dark circles so badly!!! But I was like, "Naw, Ty. Show 'em the REAL you." So...here I am. Raw. And there YOU are...looking at me, studying this picture. Maybe you're thinking, 'Whoa, she looks ROUGH.' And if you are, great! You deserve to see the REAL me. The REALLY real me. #RawAndReal"
Spoiler Alert: even without a lick of makeup and the aid of a flattering filter, Banks is still stunningly gorgeous — just as millions of "real" women around the world are.
Maybe one day "going natural" will be the norm, and we will be able to stop celebrating women for the "brave" act of taking off the foundation, false lashes and other adornments we think we need just to step out in public. But today — on behalf of all women with crow's feet, dark spots, uneven skin and forehead wrinkles — we salute Tyra for pushing us one step forward to being honest with what we see in the mirror, and loving ourselves for what we've got.
