Plies Found Liable for Shooting at 2006 Concert

Judge awards victims in Gainesville, FL, shooting, involving rapper Plies, $200,000.

After more than five years since Plies was involved in a shooting at a concert in Gainesville, Florida, that left five people injured, the rapper is being held civilly liable for their injuries. According to Hip Hop DX, the decision came down after seven days of testimony and eight hours of deliberation.
As previously reported, Plies was the target of a civil suit that claims he's partially responsible for the 2006 shooting.
According to reports, Plies's brother Ronell Levatte and two other men fired gunshots in the air at a show at Gainesville's 283 West nightclub. In March 2010, some of the injured attendees sued the Florida rapper, saying he was partly to blame for the incident. Four months later the suit was dismissed because Plies didn't fire a weapon. However, the new suit claims that Plies has profited off of the incident, and claims the rapper should be responsible for the victims' pain and suffering — to the tune of $10 million.
Plies testified that he had nothing to do with the actions of his brother or the other men, who were convicted on various charges after the incident. However, the plaintiffs undermined his testimony when they played a YouTube video he recorded admitting that he had indeed profited off the incident. One of the victims, Billy Dee Williams, also took the stand, tearfully recalling the incident.
"I just want an opportunity to get it right," Williams testified. "I felt like I was being gyped at that moment for no reason."
Each of the five victims were awarded $200,000 in damages. The defense will attempt to appeal.
