G. Dep's Murder Trial Begins
Rapper G. Dep is the focus of a bizarre murder trial that began in New York City today. As previously reported, the former Bad Boy rapper unexpectedly walked into a Harlem police station in 2011 and confessed to shooting a man during a 1993 robbery. He was arrested after investigators reopened the case, long turned cold, and found that the victim, John Henkel, had died in the manner Dep described.
Although the rapper confessed, his lawyers entered a plea of not guilty, reports the Associated Press.
In opening statements for the trial, Dep's lawyers proposed that their client's drug use was responsible for the admission. However, during the confession the 32-year-old rapper reportedly gave details about the shooting including the location and caliber of the gun used. Also, in a published interview with XXL last June, Dep continued to talk about the shooting, telling the magazine, "I felt like it was something I had to do."
In November 2011, G. Dep's wife, Crystal Sutton, spoke out in an attempt to deal with the tragedy. Sutton, who has two sons with the rapper, wrote about her reaction to the criminal drama in an open letter to VIBE.
G. Dep faces 25 years to life, if convicted.
