Grambling Women's Basketball Team Takes a Really Lopsided Victory Over Opposing Squad
Looks like there wasn’t much mercy granted Tuesday (Jan. 2) when the Grambling State Women’s basketball team set an all-time record by defeating the College of Biblical Studies 159-18, The Athletic
The 141-point win by the Tigers is the largest victory in the history of Division I women’s basketball. Previously, the record was set by Savannah State in 2018 when they defeated Wesleyan (Georgia) by a 129-point margin of victory, 155-26.
In the blowout victory, Grambling was up 34-0 before CBS, a Houston-based Division II school of the National Christian College Athletic Association, finally scored its first basket with 2:14 remaining in the first quarter and by halftime, had the game in complete control with a score of 82-10 at halftime. As the game continued, the Tigers would hold CBS to just three points in the third quarter.
Arianna Mosley had 27 points, Kahia Warmsley added 20 off the bench, while Amanda Blake and DeMya Young each contributed 15 points for the Tigers. In total, the Tigers shot 59% from the field and eight Grambling players scored in double figures.
Following the lopsided win, Grambling head coach Courtney Simmons explained the explosive scoring strategy of the Tigers' offense.
“We preach championship talk and our goal is to score 15 points every five minutes," Simmons said.
“If we score 15 points every five minutes it means you score 120 points. So, that’s our goal every game. ...,” Simmons continued. “For people who didn’t see the game and don’t take the time to look at the box score, I think is hard for them to understand like, ‘Oh my God, how could they run the score up on them like that?’ But honestly, we weren’t trying to. That’s why the players on the other team weren’t upset and their coaches weren’t upset.”
On X (formerly Twitter), Simmons also shared that her style of coaching was influenced by her time serving as an assistant and recruiting coordinator for 10 years at Troy University.
“Although the goal set out was not to win by this margin it was to play the best Grambling bball we could,” Simmons wrote. “For 10 seasons I learned from the BEST high-scoring coach in the business @ChandaRigby.
Dr. William Blocker, President of CBS said in a statement that although the school has “a long way to go” in developing its basketball program he is excited for the university’s future in the sport. He also lauded the Tigers for their remarkable performance.
“We also acknowledge the amazing talent at Grambling,” Blocker said. “What a historic evening for their team!”
For their next game, the Tigers (6-5) face fellow HBCU and SWAC conference opponent Prairie View A&M Panthers on Saturday (Jan 6).
