University of Kentucky Student Sentenced Nearly 2 Years After Racist Attack on Black Student

A lawyer for Sophia Rosing feels the punishment was “excessive.”

Former University of Kentucky student Sophia Rosing has been sentenced nearly two years after she was caught on video in a racist attack against a Black peer.

This week, Fayette Circuit Judge Lucy VanMeter sentenced the 23-year-old Rosing to 12 months in the Fayette County Detention Center, 100 hours of community service, and a $25 fine.

Initially, Rosing faced multiple charges, including first- and second-offense public intoxication, third-degree assault of a police officer, fourth-degree assault, and second-degree disorderly conduct. She posted a $10,000 bond the next night and was later released.

A video of the incident, which went viral on social media, captured Rosing, who is white, entering Boyd Hall, where she began verbally assaulting the victim, Sophia Spring, repeatedly shouting racial slurs. When police arrived, Rosing continued her verbal assault, resisted arrest, and even bit an officer in the process.

Rosing's attorney, Fred Peters, told the Lexington Herald-Leader that he felt his client’s sentence was “excessive.”

“What she said was awful,” the lawyer shared. “She got into a scuffle with the clerk and bit people on the hand; I think she did not deserve a sentence of 12 months in prison for the very first offense her in [sic] life.”

According to Peters, Rosing will be placed in protective custody while serving her sentence due to the nature of her offenses.
