Poll Finds Black Voters Are Pleased With Joe Biden And Feel He Should Run In 2024

A recent poll finds three in four Black voters approve of Joe Biden’s presidential performance.

According to a recent poll, most Black voters are pleased with the job President Joe Biden is doing, and they believe he should seek reelection in 2024.

In the first BlackTrack poll conducted by HIT Strategies since the 2022 midterm elections, 59 percent of Black voters say he should run again, and a decisive majority report they approve of his job performance at 74 percent.

These figures were released prior to Biden's second State of the Union address on Tuesday.

The support for Biden crosses generational lines, with 55 percent of voters under the age of 50 and 66 percent of  those over 50 wanting the president to run for a second term.

Additionally, the study revealed that 51% of Black voters cited inflation and the cost of living as their top concerns. Racism and discrimination ranked as the second most significant issue, and 32% said gun violence as the third most important issue. Jobs, the economy, and healthcare rounded out the top five concerns voters .

In surveys taken before the 2022 midterm elections, Black voters regularly cited these same topics as their top issues. And voters have also indicated a strong preference for Democrats who address these concerns.

Here’s Why Black Women Will Turn Out On Election Day And What We Need In Return

While 64 percent of Black voters hold a negative opinion of Republicans, 49 percent of Black men and 50 percent of Black women believed the Democratic Party was making some progress on issues impacting Black voters.

Dele Lowman Smith, Chair of the DeKalb County Board of Registration & Elections in Georgia, told BET.com that the reality of this political moment is that Black folks have the evidence that being hopeful isn’t just a wish.

“Black voters haven’t historically had the luxury of great expectations in their presidential candidates,” Smith said, noting that in Biden, “they have someone who not only demonstrated his loyalty as VP for the first Black president and selected a Black woman VP, but he’s delivered on the kitchen table issues that make a real difference.”

While the respondents to this poll are clearly supportive of Biden over any potential GOP contender who may run in 2024, political watchers say it’s important to note that there’s still work that the Biden Administration has to do. “It's important also to acknowledge that while the administration has made strides to be impactful in Black communities,” said Neal Carter, Principal of Nu View Consulting and Founder of the Black Consultant Group said. But he emphasized there are still promises made that the administration needs to follow through on not just as it relates to student loan forgiveness, but also as it relates to the economy, the housing market, and most importantly, police accountability.

3 Ways The Debt Ceiling Crisis Impacts Black Households As Lawmakers Negotiate Resolution

The poll also cited 67 percent of Black voters under 50 and 82 percent  of Black voters 50 and over approve of Democrats in Congress. Particularly telling was the finding that 51 percent of Black voters under 50 and 61 percent  of Black voters 50 and over believe their vote has the power to change issues that matter to them.

This point, according to Georgia Advisory Committee to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights chairwoman, Chantel Mullen, is of particular importance because Black voters have clearly demonstrated that they believe in the democratic process. A further reason, Mullen believes Biden’s administration must work to pass voting rights protections.

“Black voters have proven time and again that we will show up and do the work of this Democracy,” said Mullen. “And passing voting rights legislation that will make it impossible for political interests to trump Black people’s right to the ballot box is a necessity- especially to a president who can thank the Black women who went to the polls across this country to put him in the job.”
