Francis Ngannou Calls Out Judges After Controversial Loss To Tyson Fury

In a split decision, Ngannou lost after knocking Fury down in the third round.

Boxing is never short on drama and MMA champion Francis Ngannou has experienced it firsthand after his controversial split decision loss to WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, MMA Mania reports.

In the highly anticipated bout that took place on Oct. 28, most of those attending the fight and those watching all over the world believed that Ngannou was the clear winner of the 10-round exhibition. Showing off his boxing dexterity and punching power, Ngannou knocked Fury down in the third round with a left hook that caught the heavyweight champion by surprise.

But the judges scoring the fight saw it differently. Juan Carlos Pelayo of Mexico scored the fight 96-93 for Fury and Alan Krebs of the United States gave him a 95-94 victory. Ed Garner of Canada gave the fight to Ngannou at 95-94.

After the duel, Ngannou shared his perspective on the fight and why believed he should have been awarded the decision on his YouTube channel.

“I’m confident that I won that fight,” Ngannou said. “I wasn’t surprised for what happened last night. I knew that would happen. I’m learning in this game, I just moved from another sport to come here, and there’s a structure, a solid business established for people and you come disrupt that. Imagine if I walked out of there with that belt, with him being defeated for the first time. What would that look like for them, for all the people that associate with this business? I know it wasn’t going to happen.”

“But I think it’s a shame for boxing, a shame for this sport. Judges, they should be sanctioned. I want to understand why those judges judge like that,” Ngannou added.

In a post-fight interview, Fury admitted that Ngannou was more of a challenge in the ring than he expected.

“That definitely wasn’t in the script,” Fury said. “Francis is a hell of a fighter — stronger, big puncher, and a lot better boxer than we all thought he would ever be.”

Fury’s title wasn’t on the line but it goes on the record as an official fight.

According to CompuBox, Ngannou had six of 38 punches in the final two rounds while Fury landed 14 of 37. Overall, Although Fury landed more total punches (71-59), Ngannou landed more power shots (37-32).

While Ngannou said the loss doesn’t impact his career and he has several MMA flights on the docket, he wants the judges who scored the fight to be put on notice by the boxing community.

“For me, to be honest, I don’t care that much about the decision,” he continued. “But seeing those kinds of decisions mess up a lot of people's careers. This win could have been a win that my career depended on. I went out there, I busted my ass off for the victory, I get my job done, and then this thing happened. Again, I don’t care that much. But I think for the justice, those judges should be accountable for that, for their responsibility.”
