When Wu-Tang Clan first burst on the music scene in 1993, there were no other acts like the hip hop nine-piece on the Billboard charts. RZA, the frontrunner behind the Staten Island bred group, is featured this week in SONY Music’s Certified Presents Black History Month: The Music That Made Us.
This week, the series spotlights the life and career of the artist whose real name is Robert Diggs, and explores how Wu-Tang put battle rap in New York City on the map. Check out BET.com's exclusive look at the video below:
Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), the debut release for the iconic group, went on two sell more than 2 million records. The essential release spring boarded the careers for members GZA, Ol' Dirty Bastard, Method Man, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Inspectah Deck, U-God, and Masta Killa.
The origin story for the groundbreaking rap group is also centered in HULU’s Wu-Tang: An American Saga, which was renewed for a third and final season by the streaming platform. The series was initially released to commemorate the group’s 25th anniversary of their debut release.
Mostly recently RZA and DJ Scratch announced the release of a joint project – a full-length album, Saturday Afternoon Kung Fu Theater which will debut on March 4th, 2022 via 36 Chambers ALC/MNRK Music Group. The album is said to be in celebration of RZA’s childhood love and passion for kung fu movies, which has resonated throughout his musical productions and acting career.
