Skincare For Black Men Is Partly Underserved Due To Self-Care Myths; Dorion Renaud Hopes To Change That!
Buttah Skin is officially available at ULTA!
The Black-owned skincare organic brand created by actor, model & recording artist Dorion Renaud has taken the world by storm for its cruelty-free and inclusive products. As of July 25, the brand can be found on the shelves of over 650+ stores, ensuring that everyone can reap the benefits of a natural glow.
“PROUD,” is the single word Renaud uses to describe the feeling of having his collection readily available to shop for people around the world. “There is no greater feeling than knowing that the product is out in the world and that it is resonating with so many people. ULTA is a recognizable name and brand nationwide. We’re excited to be able to reach the masses.”
The brand also has some serious celebrity fans, including rapper 2 Chainz, who loved the brand so much that he participated in the "Real Kings" campaign, which dispelled the myth that Black men do not indulge in beauty and self-care practices.
Having "buttah soft skin" in the Black community is a sure sign that you are living your best life. Renaud took the cultural compliment as inspiration for the 2018 launch of his brand which makes skincare so simple that you should never have any excuses for not prioritizing your self-care routine.
“When I started Buttah Skin, I knew that the culture would recognize the name and see the product as something for them. I always say that Buttah is really a lifestyle—it means soul, passion, beauty, and community,” the entrepreneur explains to BET Lifestyle about the brand and his decision to pursue the path of entrepreneurship after watching his father run his own barbershop. "Growing up in Beaumont, TX, my father owned and operated a barbershop. I always knew I wanted to be an entrepreneur, but never imagined I would go into beauty."
After healing his breakouts with cocoa butter purchased on the streets of Harlem and receiving DMs from fans curious about his skincare secret, Renaud created Buttah Skin, a skincare company that caters to both women and men. “Everyone can use it,” he happily proclaims.
Buttah Skin prides itself in having a customizable skincare kit that consists of a gentle cleanser, a Vitamin C serum, and a moisturizer. Renaud describes it as a simple three-step program that anyone can use, saying, “Our customizable kit is great because it has something there for every skin type (dry, oily, combination skin).”
As more Black men openly embrace self-care practices to heal their bodies inside-out, Renaud encourages: “It’s about time that we break the stigma that Black men are not part of the beauty and self-care industry. We deal with so many things—Black men put on this armor of being strong from an early age. It’s important that we take the time out for taking care of ourselves and to understand that it’s okay to do it! Self-care is everything—it’s vital.”
He continues, “A lot of times I receive DMs from men that are ashamed to reach out to another man for skincare advice or feel like it’s emasculating in a way. There’s no shame in wanting to look and feel your best.”
For men who may say lack of time plays a factor in them forgoing their skincare routine, he offers a simple solution. “Take time out for yourself each day, even if it’s 5-10 mins in the mornings to commit to a routine. For those with active lifestyles, we have a great 3-in-1 tea tree scrub and detox mask to help keep your skin moisturized and protected from the elements.”
FYI: Buttah Skin is currently working on expansion into other major retail stores. “By 2023, we plan to expand our line’s offerings with more skincare and skincare tools,” Renaud teases, along with the news that the brand plans to venture into the lifestyle/home space.
