'Black Panther' Actress Connie Chiume Dead at 72
South African actress Connie Chiume, best recognized in the U.S. for her role in 'Black Panther,' has passed away.
The family of the “Black Is King” actress shared the news on her Instagram account in a post shortly after her passing on Tuesday, August 6, at Garden City Hospital in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The post read, “The Chiume Family regrets to inform you of the passing of the Internationally Acclaimed, award-winning actress Connie Chiume”. The family requested “privacy during this difficult period. The family will communicate further details.”

Her son, Nongelo Chiume, told Newzroom Afrika his mother had been admitted to the “hospital for a medical procedure.” “She was recovering well, but unfortunately we then got the news of her passing,” he said.
Chiume was initially a teacher before she rose to fame for her portrayal of Stella Moloi in the SABC1 drama series “Zone 14,” a role that earned her a South African Film and Television award. She appeared in several notable films over the years, including “Little Shop of Horrors” and Marvel’s 2018 “Black Panther” movie as Zawavari, a Mining Tribe Elder. She also appeared in the 2022 sequel, “Black Panther Wakanda Forever.”
Chiume’s cause of death was not made public.
