Shonda Rhimes's Latest Career Move Will Devastate Prime Time
Congratulations are in order for Shonda Rhimes as it was just announced that the television boss has signed a major multi-year production deal with Netflix, concluding her 15-year relationship with ABC Studios which saw her deliver hits like Grey's Anatomy, How to Get Away With Murder, Scandal and more.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, fans of Rhimes's hugely successful series need not fret as, while her production company, Shondaland, will begin producing new series for Netflix, she will still remain involved in her current broadcast shows.
Ted Sarandos, Netflix's chief content officer, recently released a statement expressing his excitement for Rhimes joining the company.
"Shonda Rhimes is one of the greatest storytellers in the history of television," he said. "Her work is gripping, inventive, pulse-pounding, heart-stopping, taboo-breaking television at its best. I've gotten the chance to know Shonda and she's a true Netflixer at heart — she loves TV and films, she cares passionately about her work, and she delivers for her audience. We're so excited to welcome her to Netflix."
Rhimes will reportedly be well-compensated for her original ideas as, according to The Wall Street Journal, which first reported the story, Netflix is set to pay the jane of all trades $10 million per year to generate and produce what they hope will be the next generation of original hit programming.
"Shondaland's move to Netflix is the result of a shared plan Ted Sarandos and I built based on my vision for myself as a storyteller and for the evolution of my company," Rhimes said in a statement. "Ted provides a clear, fearless space for creators at Netflix."
