'0 to 100' Producer Frank Dukes on Diddy's Drake Beef
Toronto-based beat-maker Frank Dukes is siding with team Drizzy in the off-courts battle over the song "0 to 100," but admits that Diddy heard it first.
In a recent interview with Noisey, the producer explained that he had the track, originally called "Vibes," in his virtual archives, Kingsway Music Library (from where producers around the world may access beats-for-use), and one day sent it to frequent collaborator Boi-1da during one of 1da's studio sessions with Diddy in Miami.
"Originally it was a three minute idea that had all these different parts and I didn’t really write it with any intent of it being used for Drake or for anyone in particular," Dukes said. "I just kinda wrote it and gave it to Boi-1da.
"From what I understand he made the beat on the spot, played it for Diddy and Diddy passed on it, he said it wasn’t life changing enough and that was that."
Dukes says Diddy's life did change once "0 to 100" became a viral sensation. The now four-minute-plus song was your favorite rapper's favorite track to remix soon after it was unleashed.
"Then fast forward, '0 to 100' becomes this huge hit and then there’s this weird… whatever happened there? I don’t know," Dukes continued, "but as far as I understand that’s how it went down."
Diddy was admittedly salty over the situation, according to video that emerged amid rumors that he punched Drake over the song. And later on, somewhere in Houston, J. Prince of Rap-A-Lot Records would record a "courtesy call" threatening the Bad Boy founder on the OVO rapper's behalf.
But if the crowd wants "0 to 100," Diddy said, "At the end of the day, this s**t is hard. Play that s**t!”
Elsewhere in Dukes's chat, the producer shares how he collaborated with Ghostface Killah and BADBADNOTGOOD for their upcoming instrumentals album, Sour Soul, expected Feb. 24.
