Hip-Hop Veteran Chino XL Dies at 50
Hip-hop has lost another legendary artist.
In a statement released Tuesday (July 30), the family of Chino XL confirmed that the New York rapper, whose real name is Derek Emmanuel Barbosa, had died in his home Sunday (July 28) morning. He was 50.
“Our father had many titles — King of Punchlines, Puerto Rican Superhero — but the most important one was Girl Dad. And what he gave us most in that role was his strength, straightforwardness, and ability to be super realistic. The main thing we are feeling now is that our Dad is at peace, and so we are at peace,” his four daughters Chynna, Bella, Lyric, and Kiyana said.
Chino’s cause of death has yet to be revealed. In the statement, the family asked for privacy as details of a memorial will be forthcoming.
Chino started his career in the music industry as a teen when he formed the rap duo Art of Origin with producer Kaoz. He later rose to fame at 16 after being signed to Rick Rubin’s American Recordings label. He released four studio albums, including Ricanstruction: The Black Rosary, which won the 2012 HHUG Album of the Year Award. Some of Chino’s biggest hits were “No Complex,” “Sickology 101” featuring Tech N9ne, and “The Anthem” featuring Sway and King Tech.
Earlier this month, the rap veteran was featured on Rakim’s latest album, G.O.D’S NETWORK - REBIRTH.
