See Serena Williams Transformed Into a Marvel Superhero
Who doesn’t love a good superhero flick? You might have to wait until 2016 for the next wave of blockbusters, but a new collaboration between espnW and Marvel Comics will surely hold you over.
The women's sports news network and the comic book publisher teamed up for espnW's 2015 IMPACT25 list, a celebration of 25 female athletes and people of influence who made a huge impact in women’s sports this year, including Serena Williams, Misty Copeland and Simone Biles. Each of the honorees were rendered into the empowering superheroes they are by a talented team of Marvel illustrators.
Williams’s illustrated character, “Super Galactic Slam," is bathed in electric blue light as she pulls back to send a tennis ball sailing through space. Fans will remember the tennis phenom was 53-3 this year, so the nickname is pretty fitting.
Prima ballerina Misty Copeland, “The Principal,” stands tall and strong in a distressed blue ensemble and matching pointe shoes. It was an incredible year for her, as she became the first African-American named principal dancer for the American Ballet Theatre in its 75-year history.
There’s also Simone Biles, the 18-year-old gymnast who set world records at the World Gymnastics Championships this year and who is the favorite to lead team U.S.A. to gold at the Rio 2016 Olympics. Her character, “Air Apparent,” is captured in mid-backflip with a stunning cityscape behind her.
