Tems Reveals Rihanna Gave Her Some Sage Advice
Temilade Openiyi, known to the world as Tems, sat down with GQ magazine to discuss her wildly successful career and the words Rihanna told her that changed the game. She recently graced the cover of the British version of the publication.
Her first name means “mine is the crown.” And the internationally-acclaimed star has been blessed to work with known artists like Queen Bey, Drake and Adele. But it was the advice from one superstar that left a mark on Tems.
The 27-year-old Yoruban singer revealed when Rihanna told her what she needed to hear.
“I just have this chill thing going on,” she said about meeting Rihanna at the Savage x Fenty show in Los Angeles in 2021. “She was like, ‘You need to be that b*tch you know you are.’”
Tems also chopped it up about working with the legendary Grace Jones and Beyoncé on her collaborative single “Move.” She recognized that she was a part of something bigger than Africa and her generation, and she wasn’t sure if the collab would ever be heard.
“You’re never really sure until it comes out. And it wasn’t something that I was focused on [or] keeping track of. Of course, it means something to me. If someone told my five-year-old self listening to Destiny’s Child that one day you’re going to have a song with one of them, I might just be confused,” she said.
Indeed, the singer is“crowned, and we hope she takes Rihanna’s advice.
