FBI Agent Who Accidentally Shot A Man In The Leg While Dancing Is Charged With Assault

Chase Bishop turned himself in to police on Tuesday.

The FBI agent who was recorded accidentally firing a gun while dancing at a Denver nightclub has been charged with second-degree assault.

Chase Bishop, who is based in the bureau's Washington Field Office, turned himself in to the Denver Sheriff Department on Tuesday after a warrant for his arrest was issued, reported CBS News.

The warrant wasn’t issued immediately after the video from the June 3 incident went viral because Denver Police were awaiting the results of alcohol and drug tests, said the department. Although the district attorney’s office is still awaiting the results from the tests, they believe they had “sufficient evidence” to file assault charges.

"We are filing this charge now rather than waiting until the [blood alcohol content] report is received, which we understand could take another week, because sufficient evidence has been presented to file it," Denver District Attorney Beth McCann said in the statement to CBS News. "If an additional charge needs to be filed after further evidence is received, we can file those charges then."

In the viral video, Bishop danced for a crowd at the Mile High Spirits bar. At one point he did a backflip, which sent his gun flying through the air. When he reached down to pick up the weapon, he accidentally fired.

As a result, a man named Thomas Reddington was shot in the leg. His attorney tells CBS Denver that Reddington suffered a serious injury.

Bishop, 29, was off-duty and on vacation when the shooting happened.

The FBI is conducting an internal investigation into the incident. Among the options are termination, suspension or reprimand.
