Dwayne Haskins' Parents, Wife Hold Separate Funerals For The Pittsburgh Steelers Quarterback

His parents wanted to avoid meeting his wife for the first time after he was killed on a Florida highway.

Dwayne Haskins’ parents are planning a separate funeral to honor the late Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback in his native state of New Jersey.

“We have never met or spoken to the wife [Kalabrya Haskins], and we didn’t want our son’s funeral service to be the place we met her for the first time,” Dwayne Sr. and Tamara Haskins said in a joint statement to WUSA. Their son would have turned 25 on May 3.

The parents planned to hold to host a funeral Saturday (April 23) from Noon to 3 p.m. EST at Christ Church in Rockaway Township, N.J. A memorial is schedule for Sunday (April 24) at 7 p.m. EST at Bullis School in Potomac, Md, where he went to high school.

His wife held a funeral Friday morning (April 22) at the Allegheny Center Alliance Church in Pittsburgh, where the couple lived, according to the Tribune Review. Urban Meyer, his college coach at Ohio State, was among those in attendance. Dwayne married Kalabrya a year ago in March.

On April 9, Haskins was attempting to cross lanes on I-595, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. He was in Florida training with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Haskins was a college football standout at Ohio State. Starting just one season for the Buckeyes back in 2018, he instantly became one of the best collegiate players, setting Big Ten records and finishing third in Heisman Trophy voting that same year.

During the 2019 NFL Draft, the then-Washington Football Team selected Haskins with the 15th overall pick, however he struggled through an up-and-down rookie season and was released during his second season in 2020.

A year later, the Steelers signed Haskins, however he didn’t play during the regular season. With the departure of veteran quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, he was vying for the starting job this offseason.
