Anger Grows Over Chokehold Death Of Homeless Michael Jackson Impersonator At Hands Of Marine On NYC Subway

Jordan Neely's death has brought out anger from activists and criticism of the Mayor.

Public outrage has continued to grow after a former Marine choked a homeless, mentally ill Michael Jackson impersonator to death on a subway in New York City, the New York Daily News reports.

Jordan Neely’s death at the hands of the unidentified 24-year-old military veteran has been ruled a homicide by the medical examiner. The cause of death was compression of the neck.

In the video recorded by passengers, the Marine is seen holding Neely in a chokehold for almost three minutes as two other passengers attempt to restrain him.

After Neely lost consciousness, EMTs and police attempted to revive him when the train stopped at a station. Shortly after arriving at a Manhattan hospital, he was pronounced dead.

Although the military veteran was brought into custody for questioning, he was eventually released. He has not been charged for his role in Neely's death.

On Wednesday, demonstrators gathered inside the East Houston and Lafayette subway station to protest Neely’s tragic killing and called for charges to be filed against the Marine.

"A life was senselessly taken away. Someone who was homeless, struggling with mental health. Right now a lot of folks are infuriated because our government is not prioritizing housing," one attendee said.

Following the demonstration, three protestors were arrested. During the protests, activists were heard chanting “Justice for Jordan Neely” and other slogans on the station’s platform.

Hawk Newsome of Black Lives Matter, Greater New York has called for the arrest of all three people captured in the video.

"All three of those people who held him should be arrested,” Hawk said. “A proper investigation should be conducted. The man who choked him to death should be charged with murder.”

Rev. Al Sharpton of the National Action Network demanded that the DA and the NYPD fully investigate the tragic incident.

"The National Action Network demands the District Attorney and police investigate this horrific incident as a potential case of manslaughter – if not murder," Sharpton said in a statement. "Thirty years ago, I fought the Bernard Goetz case and we cannot end up back to a place where vigilantism is tolerable. It wasn't acceptable then and it cannot be acceptable now."

In response to protests erupting all over the city, the Manhattan DA's office released a statement to assure the public that they are vigorously investigating the matter.

"This is a solemn and serious matter that ended in the tragic loss of Jordan Neely's life. As part of our rigorous ongoing investigation, we will review the Medical Examiner's report, assess all available video and photo footage, identify and interview as many witnesses as possible, and obtain additional medical records,” the DA’s statement read. “This investigation is being handled by senior, experienced prosecutors and we will provide an update when there is additional public information to share."

Mayor Eric Adams also shared that an investigation was underway after being harshly criticized for what was perceived to be inaction on the incident.

“Any loss of life is tragic. There's a lot we don't know about what happened here, so I'm going to refrain from commenting further,” Adams statement read. “However, we do know that there were serious mental health issues at play here, which is why our administration has made record investments in providing care to those who need it and getting people off the streets and the subways, and out of dangerous situations.

“And I need all elected officials and advocacy groups to join us in prioritizing getting people the care they need and not just allowing them to languish,” Adams’ added.

Dave Giffen, the executive director at Coalition for the Homeless, said that Neely’s death is one of the results of New York City and state officials' inadequate response to the mental health crisis. He also questioned why criminal charges have not yet been levied at the Marine.

"The fact that someone who took the life of a distressed, mentally ill human being on a subway could be set free without facing any consequences is shocking," Giffen said. "This is an absolute travesty that must be investigated immediately."
