The film's cast featured talented actors who brought their A-game to portray the Godfather of Soul's incredible life. As time has passed since the movie's release, let's look at where the cast of "Get On Up" is now.

    Viola Davis is an acting powerhouse who consistently delivers unforgettable performances. Following her performance as James Brown's mother in "Get On Up," Davis starred in various acclaimed projects, including her Emmy-winning role as Annalise Keating in the hit TV series "How to Get Away with Murder." Davis won an Academy Award in 2017 for her performance in "Fences." This year, she played Michael Jordan's mother in "Air."

  • Octavia Spencer (Aunt Honey)

    Octavia Spencer portrayed Aunt Honey, James Brown's aunt. Post-"Get On Up," Spencer continued to impress audiences in films like "Hidden Figures" and "The Shape of Water" -- both roles she earn Oscar nominations. Spencer already won an Oscar in 2012 for "The Help," and she is currently getting rave reviews for her performance in Apple TV's  "Truth Be Told."

    Jill Scott showcased her acting prowess as Deidre Jenkins, James Brown's second wife. Following the film's success, Scott made waves in the entertainment industry. She starred in TV shows like "Black Lightning" and "First Wives Club." However, Scott is a singer first and still performs nationwide. See her rendition of the "Star-Spangled Banner" at this year's Essence Music Festival.

    Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor played Vicki Anderson, who performed with James Brown for years. After "Get On Up," Ellis-Taylor slayed in HBO's "Lovecraft Country." Last year, she earned an Oscar nomination for playing Venus and Serena Williams' mother in "King Richard." Next year, she will star in "Origin," based on the book “Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents” by Isabel Wilkerson. Ava DuVernay directs the movie.

  • Dan Aykroyd (Ben Bart)

    Dan Aykroyd's portrayal of Ben Bart, James Brown's manager, was a notable addition to the film. After "Get On Up," Aykroyd took on various film and TV shows. He is currently working on various "Ghostbusters" projects, which gave him his big break back in  1984.

    Tika Sumpter delivered a standout performance as Yvonne Fair, a talented singer and one of James Brown's backing vocalists. After the film, Sumpter continued to build her acting career, starring in TV series like "The Haves and the Have Nots" and films such as "Southside with You." She also starred in "Mixed-ish" and is currently in production for "Ride Along 3."

    • Tate Taylor's direction in "Get On Up" earned the film an NAACP Image Award nomination for Outstanding Motion Picture. In 2019, he reunited with Octavia Spencer for "Ma." He is currently working on the upcoming series "Palm Royale," which includes Ricky Martin.

Next up, Ellis will star opposite Chadwick Boseman in the James Brown biopic Get on Up, in which he'll play Brown's long-time collaborator Bobby Byrd.     Nelsan Ellis was Bobby Byrd, James Brown's close friend and collaborator. Tragically, Ellis passed away in 2017 at only 39 years old, leaving behind a legacy of exceptional acting talent. His performances in "True Blood," "The Help" and "The Butler" showcased his versatility and passion for his craft.

  • Chadwick Boseman (James Brown):

    Chadwick Boseman's portrayal of the Godfather of Soul was extraordinary. After "Get On Up," Boseman starred, with his groundbreaking performance, as King T'Challa in "Black Panther." Tragically, Chadwick Boseman passed away in August 2020 at 43, leaving behind a legacy of incredible work and inspiring performances that will last a lifetime.
