Alicia Keys Makes Producing Debut in Stick Fly

The Grammy award winner will help produce the story about an affluent Black family’s weekend at Martha’s Vineyard.

Grammy award–winning Alicia Keys is making her Broadway producing debut in Lydia R. Diamond’s Stick Fly. The production will mark Diamond’s debut as a playwright.

Stick Fly follows the life of the LeVays, an affluent African-American family that comes together to spend a summer weekend at Martha’s Vineyard. The family's two sons, one a novelist and the other a plastic surgeon, bring their respective ladies, one Black and one white, to meet the family on the island. “Food, drink and Trivial Pursuit tangle with class, race and identity politics in this contemporary comedy of manners," the producers told Broadway’s Playbill.

"This is a story that everybody can relate to," Keys said in a statement. "I'm passionate about this play because it is so beautifully written and portrays Black America in a way that we don't often get to see in entertainment. I know it will touch all audiences, who will find a piece of themselves somewhere inside this house," Keys said in a statement.

The play will be directed by Tony award nominee Kenny Leon. Leon also directed August Wilson’s Fences, starring Denzel Washington and Raisin in the Sun, with Sean P. Diddy Combs and Sanaa Lathan.

Stick Fly will begin previews Nov. 18 at the Lyceum Theatre, with a planned Dec. 8 opening.
